About P&P

Scott (Pickles) and Sarah (Passionfruit) currently live in Taichung City, Taiwan. This small island, which is shaped like a delicious sweet potato has won our hearts. We look forward to sharing it with you here or in person!

We moved here January 1, 2016 (actually it was the very tail end of 2015 but we can’t recall what day so this is easier on the memory).

We think Taichung is the Portland of Taiwan… good food, friendly people, very easy to navigate by bike, lots of parks and easy mountain/beach escapes.

Taiwan is around the same size as the Netherlands and Taichung City is located in the central-western area. Taichung literally translates to Taiwan Central. The second half of the word, “Chung” means “central / “.

In Mandarin, Taichung is 台中

Wow your friends with these facts:
  • Bubble tea was invented in Taichung in the 1980s. It’s as good as you heard it is.
  • Taiwan’s population is approximately 23.5 million people, while Taichung’s is 2.7 million, making it the third largest city on the island after Taipei and Kaohsiung.
  • There are 8 National Parks on the island, lifeoftaiwan.com/national-parks
  • It’s a wee little country, yet many terrains to explore. The highest Taiwanese mountain is Jade Mountain 玉山 Yù Shān at 3,952 m (12,966 ft). Not even close to the highest mountain in the world, that being Everest at 8,848 m (29,029 ft.), but it’s still up there.

Vertically just fits in the state of Oregon…

and the state of Montana

How did we end up here?

It was a combination of our desire to live overseas and Scott’s work for Nike that landed us in Taichung. Sarah continues to work as a freelance graphic designer in her mobile office at Heckles Creative.
