Guests: Sue & Paul

What to do when you have 48 hours in Taiwan?

My Aunt Sue and Uncle Paul, from Omaha, Nebraska stopped by for a visit while en route to Japan and Bora Bora. They learned that Taiwan isn’t exactly on the way to Japan, but we were glad to show them a fun weekend in our home town of Taichung and host them for a night.

First stop after a long flight : foot massage

After a relaxing massage and with a desire to stay out of the heat we made our way to the Taichung National Theater.

Meet the locals

We strolled the parks with bubble teas, the National beverage!

Wan He Temple – 台中南屯萬和宮-天上聖母

The next day Passionfruit suggested that we visit a beautiful temple in our ‘hood.

There was a larger than usual crowd at the temple this day
Firecrackers + Mickey Mouse Gloves

What we learned is that is was Mazu’s Birthday, the Chinese Sea Goddess.  And we arrived just in time for the ear-popping celebration!

Waves of people were walking from temple to temple in the city to celebrate Mazu’s Birthday.

Every group that walked by the temple gave a performance.

An interesting mix of old costumes and Mickey Mouse gloves. Did we mention that it was a hot day pushing 100 degrees?

Boogie Woogie Jams

The costumes were beautiful.

Xiexie for visiting, Aunt Sue & Paul. We enjoyed kicking off your Asian adventure!
